The Paris Olympics are coming, and recent reports have pointed out that dengue fever may pose a major public health risk to the Olympic Games.
Looking back at the past two Olympics, Rio was threatened by Zika, and Tokyo held the Games amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, so concerns about dengue fever are not unfounded. CNN reports that Paris already meets several conditions for the large-scale spread of dengue fever. First, the Aedes albopictus mosquito is the main transmitter of dengue fever, and it has adapted to the cooler environment of Europe, already widespread in France and other European countries.
France reported 641 cases of dengue fever infection last year, and this year it has already reached 1700 cases. In October last year, Paris reported 3 cases for the first time.
During the Olympics, around 200 countries and 16 million people will come to Paris, including travelers from countries with dengue fever outbreaks, further increasing the risk.
To address the threat of dengue fever, the Paris Health Department set up 526 monitoring points last month to monitor the distribution of Aedes albopictus mosquitoes, adding insecticides to the water while also encouraging people to eliminate standing water everywhere, including using devices with human-like scents to attract and kill mosquitoes.
How do I protect myself from dengue fever?According to the WHO, that includes doing the following if you live in an area where dengue is spreading:
- Wearing clothes that cover as much of your body as possible
- Using mosquito nets that cover your bed
- Using screens in your windows
- Wearing mosquito repellents that contain DEET, Picaridin, or IR3535
We also can wearing protective clothing to prevent dengue fever, as it can effectively reduce the chances of mosquito bites and lower the risk of infection. The protective clothing is made of special materials with functions such as waterproof, breathable, and mosquito-proof, which can effectively block mosquito bites and protect the body from the threat of infection. During the Paris Olympics, wearing protective clothing will be an important protective measure to help people prevent dengue fever infection.
